About Compliance

An academic medical center is required to comply with a host of regulations. The Office of Institutional Compliance serves as an institutional resource to ensure adherence to regulations and standards applicable to UT Southwestern Medical Center.

We collaborate with ambulatory, hospital, academic, and administrative areas across campus to assist in operationalizing compliance requirements and best practices. We work with you to identify risks and develop appropriate strategies to reduce those risks.

Our Compliance Program Plan

Our Compliance Program is a formal statement of how our office will assist in supporting UT Southwestern' s educational, research, and health care missions while maintaining compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

The plan promotes a transparent and open culture and demonstrates our commitment to providing appropriate guidance, to assist in operationalizing compliance efforts, and to do what it right.

Our Compliance Work Plan

Each spring, our identifies areas of risk and strategic opportunities that require focused assessment we hope to complete in the coming fiscal year. These areas make up our department's annual work plan.

Compliance related initiatives can include focused reviews, training initiatives, and other activities.

Our Strategic Plan

Along with UT Southwestern' s overarching Strategic Plan, our office formulates its own strategic plan.  This plan articulates our strategic goals and departmental initiatives for the next three years and establishes action plans and benchmarks.

Our Compliance Culture

No matter our responsibilities here on campus, we all play a part in creating a culture of compliance. Each of us should know our job and the roles and responsibilities that apply to the work you do; behave professionally, act with honesty and integrity, and commit to giving out best every day, and speak up when something concerns us.

There are protections in place that prohibit retaliation against any employee who makes a report of suspected or identified noncompliance.

Our vision for the compliance program is to provide a framework that supports the principles of honesty, integrity, and fairness in our actions.

The Team

The Office of Institutional Compliance team is comprised of leaders who are experts in compliance rules, regulatory compliance, coding and billing, academic and research, privacy, health system operation, documentation, and billing guidance.

We collaborate with areas across the medical center to assist in operationalizing compliance requirements and best practices and to identify areas of risk and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
